If you’ve watched The Mandalorian then you are familiar with the phrase, “this is the way.” The main character and his group uses the phrase to signify a certain code and system for life. It is to be upheld at all costs and never to be broken. Once someone signs up, they must adhere to the way. When engaging in racial reconciliation or any attempt to bridge relational divides, some have also taken this approach. Their “way” is the only way and it must be adhered to by all. However, this often creates more rifts than bridges in ministry.
God has created humanity with great ethnic and cultural diversity. Thus, we see this diversity in the body of Christ as well. God calls His people to glorify Him by loving each other across all social constructs. Paul is clear when he writes:
Here there is not Greek and Jew, circumcised and uncircumcised, barbarian, Scythian, slave, free; but Christ is all, and in all.
Colossians 3:11 ESV
For as many of you as were baptized into Christ have put on Christ. There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither slave nor free, there is no male and female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus.
Galatians 3:27-28 ESV
The people of God come from many different backgrounds with many different cultures, yet we are ONE in Christ. Understand that your “way” may not work for someone else. Ministry done well (with the unwavering goals of gospel advancement and discipleship) connects with people in their cultural contexts and meets their needs.
Reflection Questions
- Where may I need to have more of an open mind regarding ministry in contexts that I’m not familiar with?
- Where is God leading me to come out of my comfort zone?
- Who can I talk to for guidance? (Someone successful in this context)
