Are You Woke?

There’s a lot of talk right now about being “woke.” Almost to the point that the idea of being woke has lost its meaning. Some groups have used it to supercharge feelings and stir up political ideologies. Others out of fear or misunderstanding have denounced the word altogether. This polarization has spilled over into Christian circles as well with some labeling so called “wokeness” as the largest threat to the gospel in today’s culture.

In his book Woke Church, Dr. Eric Mason presents another view of what it means to be woke. He explains that having Christ as our anchor should compel us to understand the needs of those around us. Beyond that, after we understand those needs, we should do something about it. Whether you label yourself woke or not, Christians are called by God through His Word to seek out to marginalized and oppressed in our societies (Isaiah 1:17). If we happen to live in communities where oppression and division occurs along racial lines, then we must address it and pursue peace with people across those lines.

Besides this you know the time, that the hour has come for you to wake from sleep. For salvation is nearer to us now than when we first believed. The night is far gone; the day is at hand. So then let us cast off the works of darkness and put on the armor of light.

Romans 13:11-13 ESV

Reflection Questions

  • Black people have been using the word “woke” for decades. Why has it been causing such a stir only recently?
  • How do Christians stay mindful of cultural issues without being caught up in the culture wars?
