Why Women’s History Month Matters!

In March of 1978 a local group in Sonoma County, CA celebrated Women’s History Week to align with International Women’s Day and the event sparked similar ones across America. In 1980 March was declared Women’s History Month by presidential proclamation. Yet, even today we see great disparities toward women including the pay gap and the horror of human trafficking. In What is God’s View of Women? I shared that women have an inherent dignity because they are human beings. Below I want to share a few major contributions from this list that women have given the world:

Maria E. Beasley invented an improved life raft in 1880. It was the first with guard rails to help keep passengers inside during emergency evacuation situations.

Marie Van Brittan Brown patented the first home security system in 1969. In conjunction with her husband Albert, they invented the system as a solution to Marie working long hours and coming home late at night.

Ann Tsukamoto was pivotal in inventing stem cell isolation in 1991. She holds 12 patents and has paved the way for cancer treatment development.

And there are many, many more!

Women’s History Month is designated for recognizing significant contributions by women in history. Now, more than ever, this celebration is very important.

Challenge yourself this month to learn more about significant contributions made by women and girls to this world. I’m very excited to do this with my daughters!
