In his 1966 classic James Brown sings:
This is a man’s world, but it would be nothing without a woman or a girl
Brown gets half of this line right. In this song he endeavors to list the achievements that men have developed over the course of history while noting the vital maternal roles that women play. Yet, he misses the opportunity to also recognize how women are also great contributors to society. Initiatives such as International Women’s Day and Women’s History Month exist to recognize the contributions women have made to this world. As I mentioned in Why Women’s History Month Matters! these include:
- The modern life raft
- The home security system
- Stem cell isolation
Indeed, this world would be NOTHING without the INVALUABLE contributions of women and girls to our society!

Reflection
- Do the women in your organization feel valued? If you’re not sure, ask them! Simple conversations or focus groups are great ways to get feedback.
- P.S. I’m a James Brown fan and I celebrate the many contributions he made to music and Black empowerment!
