Sonya Massey should be alive right now, but she is not. On July 6th she called the police because after suspecting a prowler in her home. Although she posed no threat and was unarmed, Ms. Massey was shot and killed by a Sangamon County Sheriff’s deputy.

I write this post with a heavy heart. I think about Breonna Taylor. I think about Atatiana Jefferon. I keep saying to myself, “Another black woman killed in her own home by law enforcement officers?” Sadly, this list of Black people unlawfully killed by the police continues to grow. Sandra Bland, George Floyd, Tamir Rice, Trayvon Martin. And the story of Michael Brown penetrates deeply as I’m in St. Louis. The list goes on and on.
Check on your Black friends. This impacts us differently.
On the body camera footage, Ms. Massey can be heard saying, “I rebuke you in the name of Jesus.” I agree with that prayer that Jesus would overcome all evil and hatred in America.
I wrote this post to say I grieve with these families and I long for the day when senseless killings like these are no more!
He will wipe away every tear from their eyes, and death shall be no more, neither shall there be mourning, nor crying, nor pain anymore, for the former things have passed away.” Revelation 21:4 ESV
