Decision 2024: Choose Unity

“Know this, my beloved brothers: let every person be quick to hear, slow to speak, slow to anger; for the anger of man does not produce the righteousness of God.”

-James 1:19-20 ESV

I wrote this shortly after learning that Donald Trump is the presumed winner of the 2024 presidential race, defeating Vice President Kamala Harris. Today may be a day of celebration for you. Maybe it’s a day of anger. Perhaps you are ambivalent, just over it all. Either way, the path forward is one of unity. How do we get there? Through respectful dialogue and civility.

Engaging in a tense conversation with someone you disagree with can be challenging, but it’s important to maintain respect and find common ground. Here are three tips to help you navigate these difficult conversations:

  1. Active Listening: Instead of giving a rapid response, focus on truly understanding the perspective of others. Ask clarifying questions and use reflective listening to ensure you’ve grasped their meaning.
  2. Use “I” Statements: Explain your feelings and opinions without blaming or accusing anyone else. Speaking this way will to foster a more open and honest dialogue.
  3. Seek Common Ground: Areas of connection are there! Just be patient. Focusing on shared values and goals can help to bridge the divide and create a more productive conversation.

While watching Brian Williams and company’s election coverage on Amazon, I noted that one commentator stated, “That person across the street is your friend, neighbor, and fellow citizen.” I would add that that person is also a fellow human, worthy of dignity and respect.

Remember, the goal of these conversations is to build brides of understanding, not to change the other person’s mind. So, the next time you find yourself at a conversational impasse, try these tips and see how they can help you navigate the discussion with respect and civility.
