My reconciliation work through Kathairo is based on Jesus’ words in John 15 “cleansing” is rarely just a surface-level endeavor. To truly purify the soil of our cities, we have to address the deep-rooted toxins of systemic oppression and racism. While policy shifts and economic programs are vital tools, there is a dimension of leadership that requires a different kind of posture: collective, transparent prayer.
When community leaders, pastors, activists, CEOs, and civic organizers, gather to pray, we aren’t retreating from the fight; we are fueling it.
Why the Gathering Matters
- Breaking the Silos: Systemic racism thrives on isolation and “othering.” When leaders pray together, they acknowledge a shared burden that transcends zip codes and denominations.
- Spiritual Authority: We recognize that these strongholds are not just bureaucratic; they are spiritual. To dismantle systems built on centuries of inequity, we need wisdom that exceeds our own.
- Healing the Healers: Leading the charge against injustice is exhausting. Gathering in prayer provides a space for lament, replenishment, and the recalibration of our motives.
“Prayer is not a substitute for action; it is the internal fire that makes our external action sustainable and righteous.”
Our cities don’t just need more committees; they need consecrated spaces where leaders stand in the gap. When we petition for the dismantling of “the way things have always been,” we invite a transformative power that can soften hearts and shatter glass ceilings.
Let us stop working for our cities in isolation and start standing with each other in prayer. That is where the true cleansing begins.
How are you creating space for collective prayer in your leadership circle this season?
“And without faith it is impossible to please him, for whoever would draw near to God must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who seek him.” -Hebrews 11:6
