Go Beyond DEI

Diversity, equity, and inclusion. Over the past few years more and more organizations are including these terms in their strategic plans and ensuring marketing campaigns. In a country with such a long history of division and imbalance along racial lines, this is a wonderful horizon to cross; the recognition for intentionality in seeking racial unity and healing.

Diversity, equity, and inclusion are important. A healthy society is one where no one feels sub-human or is treated as such. Thus, each of these are needed. It is good to have spaces where everyone is recognized, respected, and heard. Yet, the people of God need to go beyond DEI. Not just recognizing people out of a mandate or cultural shift, but out of a heart that loves God and loves all people that bear His image.

Paul is clear that social constructs are irrelevant in Christ (Galatians 3:28; Colossians 3:11). Does your ministry reflect the ethnic diversity of its community? This goes beyond a policy issue or a cultural trend and becomes an issue of the heart. Does everyone present feel included? Jesus prayed that His people would be one, and this would be proof of His presence in the world (John 17:20-21). How does the world know that we belong to Christ? Jesus said in John 13:33-34 that this happens when we love one another! In contrast to the disunity of the world, people should look at the Church and see Jesus through our unity and through our love.

Go beyond DEI and express the love of Jesus Christ. Does your ministry reflect the ethnic diversity of its community? Does everyone present feel included? Better yet, is everyone being loved well?
