The title of this post is a quote from Harriet Tubman, the great abolitionist and conductor of the Underground Railroad. I was recently privileged with the opportunity to speak to a group of young scholars at The Freedom School in St. Louis and discuss her life during chapel.
We discussed the bravery that Ms. Tubman exemplified. Her and many others obtained their freedom, but willingly traveled back into slave territory to lead others to freedom. The motivation obviously was not ease or comfort, but a desire to do the right thing based on trust in the Lord. Nicknamed, “Moses” because she traveled back to free her people, Harriet Tubman also said
Twasn’t me, ’twas the Lord. I always told him, ‘I trust to you. I don’t know where to go or what to do, but I expect you to lead me,’ and He always did.
Harriet Tubman

I’m grateful for the life and legacy of Harriet Tubman. She was a champion for African Americans, women, and people living disabilities. Yet, she was more than that. She is also an example of one most courageous leaders in history.
