Recently a group of people held a racist demonstration on a highway overpass in the St. Louis area, my hometown. It was a sad sight. The masked individuals held up Nazi flags and a banner proudly touting white supremacist language.
Along with sadness, it was surreal for me to witness this deplorable sight. Unfortunately, I’m used to seeing racist and bigoted demonstrations on the news in other areas of the country. But this was in my hometown! In recent history, the murder of Michael Brown in Ferguson is the only local event has rattled me more. Many questions run through my mind about safety in the community in the face of volatility.
So what can we do? How can you respond when something like this occurs? Here are a few thoughts:
- Be Vocal – Use whatever influence you have to spread messages of love and unity. John 1:5 says that “The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.”
- Be Collaborative – Be aware of organizations in your community that are standing up for racial unity and justice. Find ways to collaborate and make events known so that the message goes far and wide.
- Be Prayerful – Seek the Lord’s power to drive out hate with love. Pray that God would bring groups together to promote hope and healing in the face of hate.
“Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that.”
-Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
