How to Connect with Someone Across the Divide

Many cultural commentators would say that people are becoming more and more divided. While virtually no one would argue against the fact that we all desire community, people are also quite adept at separating from each other. It seems that our need for community is expressed to fault. We don’t just appreciate our own culture and values, but look down on “others” and what they believe. Does the media perpetuate this? A recent glance at several news sites shows an extreme focus on “followers” of this candidate or movement versus the other one. God obviously created humanity with the potential for the great diversity that exists in our world. And there is a great beauty in that diversity. Below is one simple question to help stimulate helpful conversations:

Why do you feel that way?

When you find yourself at a conversational impasse with someone, ask this question. My observation is that when people quickly separate over cultural and political issues, their opinions are often wide, but not very deep. Maturity begets genuine curiosity in others and the desire to expand one’s own worldview. Asking someone about the underlying reasons for their position:

  • Brings humanity into the conversation
  • Conveys interest in them (over the disagreement)
  • Opens the door to learn more about each other, including areas where you agree!

James says there is great value in not rushing to be angry, but instead being quick to listen (1:19). When we listen to each other everybody learns and everybody wins!
