Tulsa Reckons with Its Horrific Past. What’s Next?

The Tulsa Race Massacre of 1921 was a devastating event in which a white mob attacked the abundantly prosperous Black community of Greenwood. The two-day atrocity resulted in numerous deaths, destruction of property, and displacement of thousands.

The city continues its efforts to identify the remains of other victims through genetic and DNA analysis. Additionally, the U.S. Department of Justice is conducting a civil rights review of the massacre and plans to release a report by the end of the year.

A memorial service was held on November 12th to honor the victims of the Massacre whose remains were discovered during an investigation. A monument was erected in Oaklawn Cemetery to commemorate these individuals. C.L. Daniel, the first identified victim from the investigation, was specifically honored during the ceremony. The city is continuing its efforts to identify the remaining unidentified victims.

The Tulsa Race Massacre is sadly just one of many race riots in American history. Similar events took place in Atlanta, Omaha, Chicago, and East St. Louis. When will their reckoning take place? Further, there is a current uprising in racial hatred demonstrations. This includes a group touting Nazi imagery and chanting racial slurs in St. Louis and similar demonstrations across the United States.

In a similar hate demonstration in Columbus, OH no arrests were made. The reason given? “The Constitution protects First Amendment activity, no matter how hateful”

Are we doomed to repeat the past? When will we learn from our transgressions? What’s next for America?
