Goodbye to DEI?

-Helen Keller

News outlets large and small have been reporting recently on an impactful announcement by Walmart. Forbes, CNN, and several other have stated that the behemoth global retailer has announced that it will substantially scale back its diversity equity and inclusion (DEI) initiatives. Will other major companies follow suit? In the aftermath of 2020, including the tragic murder of George Floyd, many major corporations made strong DEI commitment. But how many have followed through?

Moreover, there is a growing movement against DEI efforts by those who see them as unfair or even, “reverse racism.” But intentionally focusing on racial equity in organizational culture benefits everyone involved. Some of those benefits are below:

  1. Greater Innovation: A diverse workforce brings more experiences and ideas to culture. This fosters a more creative work environment, leading to better problem-solving and strategic planning.
  2. Greater Morale: Strong DEI programs help create a positive work culture, leading to higher employee morale and lower turnover rates. Better morale also yields greater retention.
  3. Greater Connections: This positive culture will spill over in interactions with community partners and other stakeholders. Your organization will also develop a positive (and true) reputation for standing up for what’s right.

By prioritizing DEI, organizations can unlock their full potential and create a more equitable and thriving workplace.
