The Gift of Presence

Merry Christmas! This is the time of year when people are scrambling to find the right gift for their loved ones. Yet, in our fast-paced world, it’s easy to let relationships fall by the wayside. Technology takes the place of the genuine and meaningful connections that are essential for our well-being. In our distracted society, the best gift you can give someone is your undivided time and attention. Here are three ways to cultivate presence and engagement in your relationships:

1. Engage: Technology can be a double-edged sword. While it allows us to stay connected, it can also distract us from those physically present. When you’re with someone, silence your phone notifications and put it away. Make eye contact, listen actively, and focus on the conversation. This shows respect and allows you to fully engage with the other person. Put down the phone and be fully present.

2. Express: Move beyond small talk. Ask questions that go beyond a simple “yes” or “no” answer. Encourage your loved ones and coworkers to share their thoughts and feelings. Listen attentively, without interrupting. Pay attention to both verbal and nonverbal cues. This demonstrates genuine interest and fosters a deeper connection. Listen deeply and ask open-ended questions.

3. Experience: Try to see things from their perspective. Acknowledge their feelings, even if you don’t necessarily agree with them. Validate their experiences by saying things like “That sounds frustrating” or “I can see why you’d feel that way.” This creates a safe space for open communication and strengthens the bond between you. Validate their experiences by practicing empathy.

Jesus’ life, God coming to earth in humility, exemplifies the power of presence and empathy. He consistently prioritized connecting with people on a deeply human level. He spent time with the marginalized, listened patiently to their concerns, and responded with compassion and understanding. By embodying these qualities, Jesus demonstrated the transformative power of genuine human connection and laid the foundation for us to build meaningful relationships with others.
