Leadership is Exploration

At my core, I am an explorer. I deeply enjoy trying new things, meeting new people, and exploring new places. It’s how God made me. Recently I was blessed to take a vacation to Colorado Springs to relax and enjoy some hiking in the mountains. I visited a very popular area called the Garden of the Gods, named out of awe of it’s majestic sandstone rock formations.

The Garden is massive at over 1,000 acres. I’ve walked through it several times before and have sense of familiarity. Yet, during this last trip something in me decided to go off the trail I knew and and explore new ones. For a while my sense of direction was off and at times I wasn’t completely sure where I was. Yet, by the end of my time I learned new details about the Garden and increased my familiarity of these new paths. Over the course of the day I saw how the new paths I was on connected with the old paths I already knew. I came there with a good understanding of how it was structured, but I left with an even better one.

This is leadership, taking the path of exploration and discovery. From new projects, new partnerships, new cultures, and even learning more about ourselves, true leaders are OK with getting lost in unfamiliar territory to find new paths and learn new things. Sometimes we need to turn around, sometimes we trudge forward. Yet, it all lends to new opportunities and new discoveries.

Where is God leading you to explore a new and unfamiliar path?

“Trust in the Lord with all your heart,
and do not lean on your own understanding.
In all your ways acknowledge him,
and he will make straight your paths.”

Proverbs 3:5-6
