Y’all, I’m Tired

Y’all, I’m tired. Watching another Black family lay their young son to rest this week, 18-year-old Nolan Xavier Wells, brings back the heartbreakingly familiar pain. It is an exhausting, devastating rhythm: another life cut short, another family left searching for answers, and another name added to a tragic, unending list.

I had the honor to serve for a short stint on the board for the Ahmaud Arbery Foundation. This experience showed me the heavy reality behind these national headlines. Meeting Ahmaud’s mother, Wanda Cooper-Jones, stripped away any abstraction. Sitting across from her, you see the agonizing grief, the quiet strength, and the real person and family impacted by tragedy.

Yet, even under the weight of this grief, I refuse to let despair have the final word. I’m tired, but I am hopeful.

“as sorrowful, yet always rejoicing; as poor, yet making many rich; as having nothing, yet possessing everything.” -2 Corinthians 6:10

This week, I had the privilege of leading a training session for educators, ministers, university professors, and nonprofit leaders on how to foster genuine racial unity. Standing in a room filled with Christian leaders who are actively committed to doing the hard, necessary work recharged my spirit. It served as a powerful reminder that while the road is long, we are not walking it alone.

We must keep moving forward together. As Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. famously reminded us:

“Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that.”

Let’s keep being the light. Keep sharing hard truths. Keep pointing people to Christ.
