Hitting the Target on Corporate Racism

Target’s recent rollout, and hasty removal, of a children’s clown costume styled in blatant, Jim Crow-era minstrel imagery featuring a Black child is appalling. A trite, flaccid apology claiming they “got this wrong” is an unacceptable recompense for globally influential, corporate racism.

There is zero excuse for this to happen. To believe this was a simple mistake requires ignoring the dozens of corporate levels—designers, merchandising directors, buyers, and marketing teams—that had to review, greenlight, and publish this product. This was not an accident; multiple people in positions of power actively facilitated the resurrection of anti-Black hate and historical ridicule aimed directly at Black children.

I have been deeply critical of Target since they systematically rolled back their diversity commitments—ones born out of the global reckoning following George Floyd’s murder just miles from Target’s Minneapolis headquarters. When you gut your diversity efforts, you intentionally purge the very oversight that identifies and stops structural bigotry. Without people of color in the room to challenge these decisions, corporate negligence naturally morphs into active harm.

Target isn’t merely regressing on its cultural pledges; it is actively escalating racial hostility under the banner of retail. A hollow corporate statement does not erase the trauma of weaponizing a Black child’s likeness for Sambo caricature. It is time to demand true accountability, structural overhaul, and an outright refusal to accept shallow PR defenses for systemic violence.
